Engineering Learning Community for Academic Success (ELCAS)

The Engineering Learning Community for Academic Success (ELCAS) program provides engineering freshmen a supportive environment for learning and growth, fostering a sense of community among engineering students. The ELCAS program is essentially a cohort system where 10 ~ 20 students are grouped and enrolled in the same class sections for selected courses. Throughout the semester there will be facilitated study groups and social events scheduled for ELCAS students.

To participate in ELCAS you must:

  • Be an entering engineering freshman for Fall 2008
  • Pass (or be exempt from ) the Entry Level Math and English Placement Test

  • Sign up between June 16 and June 30 for freshmen orientation (www.sjsu.edu/orientation/)
  • Take the Math Placement Exam given during or prior to the freshmen orientation and qualify for college-level math course (www.math.sjsu.edu/calculus/)
  • Complete and submit an online application before your freshmen orientation date.
  • Register for classes according to your cohort class schedule which will be provided in the registration session on the second day of the freshmen orientation.
