Probation Advising
Academic Probation or Continued Probation means that a student has failed to maintain satisfactory academic progress in all course work attempted at San José State University. Undergraduate and 2nd Baccalaureate students are placed on probation when the SJSU cumulative grade point average falls below a "C" average (2.00) in all units attempted.
Undergraduate and 2nd Baccalaureate students are disqualified from the University when, after being on probation, they drop below a specified SJSU GPA for their class level. The GPA threshold for the different class levels are:
Senior / 2nd Baccalaureate = 1.95
Junior = 1.85
Sophomore = 1.70
Freshman = 1.50
If you have been placed on academic probation or are continuing probation, a hold will be placed on your account and you will be unable to register for classes for future semesters until you have received the academic advising you need. In order to have your probation hold removed, you must complete the following steps:
- Attend a Probation Workshop offered by the Engineering Student Success Center (ESSC). Reserve your space by visiting the ESSC in room 344 or by calling the ESSC front desk at 408-924-3990. Fall 2009 workshops will be conducted at the following times in the ESSC conference room, 344A:

- Meet with an ESSC Staff Advisor to create an academic plan and to review your General Education Program requirements. This first meeting will be scheduled after you have successfully completed an ESSC probation workshop.
- Attend three (3) individual probation advising sessions with an ESSC peer advisor. You will be assigned a peer advisor after you have met with an ESSC staff advisor.
After you have attended a workshop and all individual staff and peer advisor meetings, your probation hold will be lifted. Please remember that ESSC staff and peer advisors cannot lift “major advising” holds. This must be done by your faculty advisor in your department.
If you have any questions about academic probation or disqualification, call the ESSC front desk at 408-924-3990 or e-mail success.engineering@sjsu.edu
