October 1 - November 30 for priority consideration.
Students admitted with less than 60 units are considered lower division. Students admitted with more than 60 units are considered upper division.
To whom can I go for major advising? General Education advising?
See your major advisor for questions pertaining to the major (go to www.engr.sjsu.edu/departments/ and click on your department). Advisor’s office hours are posted on their doors. For General Education advising go to the Engineering Student Success Center (ESSC) ENG 344 (see above).
Only undergraduate and post baccalaureate students seeking a second baccalaureate degree can get advising in the Engineering Student Success Center.
How many hours/week do I need to study?
You should plan on studying 7-9 hours per week out of class for every 3 unit class and add on 2-3 hours for each additional unit. For example: a 4 unit class = 9-12 hours per week, a 5 unit class = 11-15 hours per week. Some students will need more time, some will need less. A lot depends on study habits, attitudes, and the nature of a student’s engagement with the material.
What about working during the school year?
If you work full time, no more than one course is recommended. If you work half-time, no more than 12 units are recommended.
Do I need to take Engr 8?
Engineering 8 is not a required course but is strongly recommended for incoming freshmen. The course covers a series of topics related to college survival and success in engineering.
What are the prerequisites for registering for PreCalculus (Math 19)
You must have received an SAT score of 550 to be eligible for pre calculus. If you had to take the Entry Level Math Exam as a Freshman, you would not be eligible to register for Math 19 unless you have taken the Math Placement Exam given by the Math Dept and received a score commensurate with Pre Calculus.
What are the prerequisites for registering for Calculus courses?
1. If you have completed the Advanced Placement Exams for Calculus AB and/or BC and received a score of 3 or higher you can register for the appropriate course after submitting the official scores to SJSU.
or
2. Have an SAT score of 550 or higher and take the Math Placement Exam offered by the Math Dept. Your score on the test will determine whether you will be able to register for Math 30, Math 30P, Math 19, or Math 8.
When can I transfer to SJSU?
You must meet the admissions deadline and apply via csumentor. Although most transfer students are required to complete the 4 basic skills areas (i.e. math, oral communication, English, critical thinking) with a grade of C or higher before being admitted to SJSU, students who apply as Engineering majors will not be held to Area A.3 (critical thinking). However, all new admits will need to complete English 1B and earn a C or higher prior to taking the Writing Skills Test which is a prerequisite for taking the Written Communications II (Engr 100w) course.
How do I find out what courses I’ve taken at my transfer school will satisfy my major requirements?
See your transfer advisor from your Major Dept or, if you are transferring from a California Community College, go to www.assist.org for information.
How do I find out what GE credit I will be given?
Visit the Engineering Student Success Center (ENG 344) and bring a copy of unofficial transcripts from your transfer college as well as any Advanced Placement, CLEP, or International Baccalaureate test scores.
Can Upper Division courses be transferred?
Yes, as electives from a four year university, although not from a community college. However, the differential equations and linear algebra courses (which are lower division at the community college) may be transferred into a major and may cover math requirements for Math 123, Math 129A and 133A, although they will not count as upper division courses. For course equivalencies in your major, submit course descriptions to your major advisor or to the department that offers the course.
Can an upper division course completed at a four year university satisfy any of the SJSU Studies?
No. In addition to Engineering100W, the two courses required to complete SJSU Studies Areas S and V must be taken at SJSU.
Can a "D" be transferred?
For General Education courses, a "D" can transfer as long as it is not part of a major requirement or part of the 4 Basic Skills (ie. math, oral communication, critical thinking, English composition).
I have just transferred to SJSU and I need to catch up on lower division courses, but they are currently full. What should I do?
Over the summer or winter sessions you may catch up on these courses at local community colleges. You may also take lower division courses at SJSU Open University if they are offered during the summer or winter.
What if I have courses from a university out of state or outside of the U.S.?
Evaluations of such courses may be complex, so you should see your major advisor as soon as possible after being admitted into the College of Engineering for engineering related courses. For General Education courses, visit the Engineering Student Success Center in ENG 344.
What do I do if I receive an Incomplete grade in a class?
Contact your instructor to make arrangements to complete the work so that you can receive a grade. You have one year to make up the incomplete grade before it reverts to a grade of “IC” which is computed into your grade point average as a grade of “F”. Do not re- register for the class with an outstanding incomplete grade.
What if I want to drop a class after the Drop Deadline ?
The only way you can drop a class after the initial Drop Deadline and receive a grade of “W” is to submit a petition for Late Drop. With the petition you must submit a written petition stating the serious and compelling reasons that have caused your need to request the late drop, documentation of the reasons, and the instructor’s signature.
If a class I want is full, how can I get into it?
You may not be able to get in, if the class is full. See the Schedule of Classes on Waitlisting for courses during on-line registration. Once classes start, the Waitlisting option is dropped, and the instructor has the final word on admitting more students.
What is the difference between the Physics 50 series and Physics 70 series?
Physics 70 is considered the more advanced physics series. You must have received a grade of “B” or better in high school physics and pass a placement test given by the Physics Dept to determine your eligibility for the Phys 70 series. However, either of the series may be taken to complete the Physics requirement in your major. Talk to your advisor about what would be appropriate in your case.
When can I complete the Written Communications II requirement?
You must take and pass the WST after completing Engl 1B with a grade of “C” or better. Once you have completed the Core GE requirements and achieved Junior level (60 semester units) you will be able to register for Engr 100W, as well as the two courses that will satisfy Area S and Area V.
How do I clear my major (engineering) advising hold?
To remove your major advising hold you must meet with your major advisor from your engineering department before registering for each semester. Most advisors will have their advising hours posted outside their office or in the department.
How do I clear my probation hold?
Click on the following link for information on clearing your probation hold:
http://www.engr.sjsu.edu/students/essc/advising/prob
What happens if I am disqualified from SJSU because of my grade point average?
Check with ESSC for procedures to petition for reinstatement and possible readmission to SJSU.
What is the Co-op program and can I get any credits towards graduation from it?
This program is more for senior students; however, it is a great opportunity to keep in mind. If a student is working at a job in the technology related area, he/she can fill out a form and have his/her supervisor meet with the co-op coordinator, and they can work out a program for the student geared toward engineering. This is an actual course and three credits will be given upon completion.
What is the Major Form and when do I fill it out?
The Major Form is both a record of a student's accomplishments and a contract stipulating all additional work a student needs for graduation. It must be approved and on file in your engineering department office at least one year before graduation. If you are late, you may have to delay graduation. Your major advisor should help you get it started.
