Blackboard CE Frequently Asked Questions
  1. What is Blackboard CE?   Blackboard CE is the campus-wide online course management tool for SJSU.  It is described more fully at http://online.sjsu.edu/, and particularly important for new users is the "Getting Started" link.

  2. Do I need to "sign-up" for Blackboard?  No.  If you pre-register for courses with the Registrar (via MySJSU) and your class has been synchronized to the Registrar's records, your status should be established automatically.  However, if you are not pre-registered or if the course has not been synchronized, access to the course would have to be enabled by your instructor.

  3. Where do I log in?  The appropriate login page is http://sjsu6.blackboard.com/.  Logging in from this site should display all courses for which your Blackboard username is active.

  4. What is my Blackboard username?  Your Blackboard username is the same as your 9-digit SJSU ID, including the leading "00".  For example, "001234567".

  5. What is my password?  The default password is typically set by the staff at eCampus (http://online.sjsu.edu/)...see "Getting Started" in the student section.  The same password is used for all of your courses in Blackboard CE.

  6. What if Blackboard says my password is wrong?  If the default password appears to be wrong compared to what is stated by eCampus at http://online.sjsu.edu/ under "Getting Started" in the student section, you might try other seasons "spring", "summer", "winter", "fall" (case sensitive).  If none of these work, please do use the "eCampus Help" link at http://online.sjsu.edu/ or call 408-924-2670 to request a password reset.  Individual course instructors are unable to reset passwords.

  7. How do I change my password?  As soon as you log in, there should be a "My Settings" link in the upper right corner of the main window, which leads to a "My Profile" sub-tab and a "Change Password" button.

  8. Why am I unable to log in?  The most common reasons are (1) wrong username or password, (2) not yet officially enrolled in the class, (3) access not yet granted by instructor.  Whenever requesting help, be sure to specify your SJSU ID and include the exact text of any error messages that you encounter.

  9. How do I auto-forward Blackboard CE Mail?  Blackboard allows you to forward automatically all of your mail messages to an external email address (gmail, yahoo, hotmail, etc.).  As soon as you log in, there should be a "My Settings" link in the upper right corner of the main window, which leads to a "My Tool Options" sub-tab and a "Mail forwarding" section.  Auto-forwarding is highly recommended because it saves you from having to log in to Blackboard in order to receive messages.

  10. Why use Blackboard CE Mail?  From the instructor's standpoint, Blackboard CE Mail is effective because it is firmly organized by class, avoids having to keep track of  individual email address changes, can handle large file attachments, and is protected from online spam.  Students may still prefer to use external email instead, but if so should be sure to enable auto-forwarding of Blackboard CE Mail in order to receive messages from the instructor and other classmates who use the system.

  11. Why can't I download the file associated with a link, even though it is visible in Blackboard?  Some browsers have conservative security settings that require your permission before downloading.  For example, Internet Explorer sometimes displays a message toolbar under the menu bar explicitly asking permission before download.
