Work Life Balance Resources for SJSU Faculty

What is some good advice to manage work and life balance here at SJSU?

Here are some compiled tips of best practices from SJSU faculty:

Work with your chair to schedule the classes you will be teaching at times that work for both you and your students.
Try to allow time to pick up your children or meet other family responsibilities with enough lag time before or after
to not generate added stress.

Block windows of time in your schedule to focus on strategic career goals: block time to work on your research, write, etc.  Do not schedule things over this time or work on other issues (like the ever present need to prep for classes) during this time.  Keep a running to do list of things to working related to this strategic goal and only work on those things during this blocked time.

Use online media as a part of your course.  Have a online class shell along with regular class period.  Using the chat room and discussion board will allow you to still keep in touch with students if you need to miss class or office hours due to an unexpected family commitment.

Have some key class activities that are relevant to your learning objectives to the class but can be worked on without you prepared at the beginning of the semester.  Some examples might be watching a relevant video or reading through and answering discussion questions on some related articles.  These can be placed into the class period at the last minute if you have an unexpected family commitment.
