Week1  Enrollment and course organization, Introduction to design process; Project discussion. (Ch1, 4, Ullman)

Week2  Planning phase; Identification of a need; Specifications development; Concept generation. (Ch5, 6, 7, Ullman)

Week3  Concept evaluation; Product design phase; Documentation; Product generation. (Ch 8, 9, 10, Ullman)

Week4  Evaluation for function and performance; Evaluation for cost, manufacturing, ease of assembly, and other measures;(Ch11, 12, Ullman).  Human factors in design.  (Appendix D, Ullman)

Week6  Review of design for dynamic loads (fatigue).  (Ch6, Norton)

Week7  Design of mechanical springs; extension, comp. & torsion, Mechanical springs; design for static and fatigue loading.  (Ch13 Norton)

Week8  Rolling contact bearings; Bearing types, Life and load capacity; Selection of ball & tapered bearings.  (Ch10 Norton)

Week9  Brakes and clutches (friction type); Internal & external drum, Full face, caliper brakes and band brakes, Full face and cone clutches, other type of brakes & clutches  (Ch15 Norton)

Week10  Gears; types, kinematics, gear trains (conventional & planetary), Force analysis, Spur and helical gear design based on bending and surface fatigue strength.  (Ch11,12 Norton)

Week11  AGMA design code, (Ch11,12 Norton)

Week12  Fatigue design using fracture mechanics approach, Plastic zone, Fracture toughness, Crack propagation rate, examples.   (Notes)

Week13  Design with composite materials; Overview of mechanics of composites, Properties, Joining of composites.  (Notes)

Week14  Design with plastic materials; Thermosetting plastics, Thermoplastics, Properties, Joining of plastics, (design & processing of plastic parts)  (Notes)

Week15  Project Presentation, Course review.     Design Project Report Due Dec 10 (Friday)
