Frequently Asked Questions

General Advising Information
How often do I need to see my advisor each semester?
Each student is required to meet with an academic advisor at least once for the next semester’s course planning and sign-up approval. Otherwise, there will be a hold on your class registration for next semester.

What are the advising hours for this semester?
Each semester an advising schedule is posted on the bulletin board in the Department as well as on the Department website. Sign up for an advising time via the online Google Group, and make it a point to come when you signed up. AE students are on a first come first serve, drop-in basis. If need be, you may also drop in for ME advising, but students with appointments have priority.

What do I need to prepare before seeing my advisor?

You need to complete the upper half of the Academic Advising Guide (blue color) form before you see your advisor. Bring a printout of your grades from the previous semester.

When should I sign up for advising for next semester?
When your class schedule is settled for the current semester, then you are ready for advising for the next semester. Due to the large undergraduate student population within the MAE Department, please do come early for advising.

What should I do if all the available time slots for advising are full?

In this case, you may want to check with other advisors’ sign up sheet. If none of them fit your schedule, you may do a standby for advising but will be on 1st come 1st serve basis.

Major Form for Graduation

When should I file Major Form for graduation?
Major Form should be filed about 15 months before the intended graduation date.

Where can I get the information for Major Form package preparation?
Major form filing instructions and template can be found in the MAE Department form folder near the Department entrance (on top of the table at the right hand side) and on the MAE Department website at: http://www.engr.sjsu.edu/mae/undergrad_forms.htm. In general, the Major Form package should include Major Form filing checklist (green form), Major Form, GE checklist, Application Form for Graduation, SJSU transcript, and other attended colleges transcripts.

Where do I go to get a GE checklist?
Make an appointment with a GE advisor in the College Advising Center, room E242 for a GE checklist. Can I just drop off my Major Form package to any of the advisors within the Department? No, you should make an appointment with one of the advisors by signing up a time slot during the advising hours. In this way, an advisor can go over your package with you together to check for proper format, accuracy, and documents.

After I turn in my Major Form to an advisor, what is the next step?
The Department will check your Major Form package for accuracy. One of the two things will take place: If there is an issue/problem with your Major Form package, you will be contacted by phone or email by the Dept. staff. If there is no issue, then your Major Form will be forwarded to the Admission and Records - Evaluations office. A copy of your Major Form package will be available for you to pick up in the student folder when the Department approves your Major Form.

Engr 100W
When can I take Engr100W course?
When you are in upper division standing, and you have completed the core GE
courses and have passed the Writing Skills Test (WST) with satisfactory score, then you are ready to take the Engineering 100W course. If I fail my WST, what writing course should I enroll in? You should plan to enroll in Engr 90W or LLD 99 to improve your writing skill.

Since E100W classes are always full, can I take courses required E100W as pre-requisite first and then take E100W later?
No, a pre-requisite requirement must be met for all courses including E100W.
GE Courses.

Can I take upper division (S-Area, V-Area, or E100W) GE courses without completing my lower division (core) GE requirement?
To be eligible for registering upper division GE courses, you must complete all lower division GE course requirement first.

Where can I find out the information on available courses for different GE category
requirement?

The GE courses for each category are listed in the class schedule posted on the
University website each semester.

Can I take S and V-Area courses without completing the E100W?
Yes, S-Area and V-Area courses require completion of all lower division GE core
courses and pass WST.

Other General Questions
I already took CompE 46 before becoming an ME/AE major. Do I still need to take
ME30?

No. CompE 46 can substitute for ME 30.

What's the difference between Math 30 and Math 30P?
Both classes satisfy the same requirement. Math 30P includes Calculus I and Analytic Geometry while Math 30 is Calculus I only, Math 30P is better if your math background is not strong. Math 30P is 5 units whereas Math 30 is 3 units. However, you must pass a placement exam first for either course.

What's the difference between the Physics 70 and 50 series?
Both satisfy the same requirement. The Physics 70 series consists of three classes for a total of 12 units. The 50 series includes four classes for a total of 14 units. The 70 series goes a little faster, and you must pass a placement exam to take Physics 70. If you did well in your high school physics class, you have a good chance of passing the placement test, thus saving yourself some time in your schedule. However, the 70 series doesn't start every semester, so check the class schedule.

I started by taking the Physics 50 series. Can I switch to the 70 series? (Or vice versa)
No. The classes cover material in different order, so once you start taking one series, you must finish with it.

Can I start senior design in the spring?
No. Senior design must be started in the fall semester for both ME's and AE's. It is important to watch the pre-requisites for senior design closely -- otherwise you could unintentionally add an entire year to your graduation date!
