"Is it a motoscooter, or a briefcase?"

Undergraduates Jason Treadwell, Michael Holmes, and Reed Musselman are the proud inventors of Moto-Case - "the original motorized briefcase." The project started out simply as a class project in a mechanical engineering class with then Associate Professor Raymond Yee.

The goal was to figure out how to build the smallest possible go-kart but from there, the team kept pushing the design until it became a two-wheel scooter that folds into a briefcase that weighs 25 pounds. The target market is people who take public transportation and need a ride to their final destination.

The group has a patent pending on the design and is working on a final, lighter version. Holmes has already visited China to research the manufacturing issues involved. And the team hopes to ultimately sell the product to a company able to manufacture it.

"This was about five times the work we had to do for the class," Treadwell said, "but we just kept challenging ourselves."
