Dr. Fred BarezThe Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (MAE) Department at San Jose State University offers BS and MS degrees in Mechanical Engineering and Aerospace Engineering. The Department’s Programs are accredited by the Accreditation Board on Engineering and Technology (ABET) and is nationally recognized by the US News and World Report Magazine.

The MAE Department with 1,000 undergraduate and graduate students is the third largest department in the College of Engineering. Twelve (12) dedicated full-time faculty and twenty (20) part-time industry professors in the department provide excellent academic curriculum that integrates extensive laboratory experience, hands-on projects and exposure to state-of-the-art hardware and software in preparing graduates to successfully launch their industry careers or to pursue graduate studies.

Department faculty, in collaboration with industry partners, industry faculty, and students have developed several courses and laboratories to address the resources and talent development for the areas of demand and national interest, such as the energy and environment, bioengineering, robotic and MEMS, electronics packaging and thermal management, product design and development, space exploration, and computational fluid dynamics.

The MAE Department received over ten (10) National Science Foundation Awards used to develop course, curriculum and laboratories, as well as receiving several undergraduate research initiation grants.

Students, through faculty guidance and mentorship, participate in local, regional and national competitions with great outcomes.

In recent years, the Department has enjoyed student enrollment increases, has recruited excellent faculty, and developed industry partnerships in support of projects, grants, internships, and financial resource development.

Career opportunities for ME and AE graduates are limitless and our graduates currently enjoy rewarding careers in industry and/or pursue graduate studies at San Jose State University or other fine institutions throughout the country. We are proud of our students and alumni of the MAE Department and invite you to become a student in our programs.

We would like you to browse through our website to learn more about our students, alumni, faculty, and facilities. We are proud of our accomplishments and welcome the opportunity to hear from you.

Fred Barez,
Professor and Chair
