Wireless Laptop Initiative

The Computer Engineering department voted to join the wireless laptop project beginning Fall 2004. This means that officially each new (frosh or transfer) student is expected to have a laptop with wireless capability. Starting Fall 2005 all students are expected to have access to a wireless laptop for class work.

Not every course will require a wireless laptop ? but some will. It is recommended that you not run right out to buy a laptop if you don't already have one; rather wait to see what sort of deals you will be able to get. Consult with your instructors about the necessity of a laptop if you are in doubt.

There are companies working with the school to provide special pricing on laptops and perhaps even offering laptops with a "Computer Engineering/Computer Science" image loaded onto the system when you get it from the company. This means that you will have the non-proprietary software you would need to use in several CMPE classes preloaded on the system.

If you do not choose such a pre-loaded configuration you will need to be ready to set the system you buy up with dual boot capability (if it is a PC) or install Virtual PC (if it s a Mac) and obtain the various packages as you need them.
