Congratulations to Carolline Day, ChemE undegraduate, who won the best overall poster at her internship at Genentech, "Dirty Jobs Confined Spaces Inventory." Carolline scoured the South San Francisco campus all summer ("an exhaustive search," as she described in her poster) to identify and inventory confined spaces, such as storm drains and catch basins, where some employees must enter for inspection, maintenance and cleaning. Her next steps are to put stickers on those many spaces that require a permit for entry and create a database for all exterior spaces around campus. She also plans to create an app with photos and GPS coordinates of all spaces to be used by the first alert team (FAT) in case of an emergency.

BMES Student Chapter at San Jose State University is the recipient of the 2012 Biomedical Engineering Society (BMES) Meritorious Achievement Award

Congratulations to Dr. Claire Komives (ChE) who was promoted to Full Professor in May 2012. Dr. Komives has an active research group on the application of engineering principles to biological sciences for the development of bioprocesses for chemicals and pharmaceuticals. She has developed educational resources on integrating biotechnology into traditional chemical engineering curriculum.
