Frequently Asked Questions on Chemical and Materials Engineering Graduate ProgramsWelcome! We have excellent Master's programs in Chemical Engineering and Materials Engineering. What is San Jose like?San Jose has a vibrant downtown with lots of restaurants, museums, and entertainment. It is located in the heart of Silicon Valley, one of the leading areas for microelectronics, biotechnology, nanotechnology, and alternative energy. Our department taps into these resources through guest lecturers and instructors from industry, company tours, and research and internship projects for students. What is the curriculum?We offer Master's degrees in Chemical Engineering and Materials Engineering. You can view the Chemical Engineering and Materials Engineering curriculum online. Each program requires 30 units. We have technical electives in a broad range of specialties including biotechnology, microelectronics, nanomaterials, environmental issues, and materials characterization. The elective lists are grouped by emphasis are but you do not need to specialize. You may take electives from any emphasis area that interests you. You can also find out a lot of information about our program by visiting the advising site for current students. Do you accept students without MatE or ChE BS degrees?Yes, you can apply to our program if you have a B.S. in a science or engineering degree from an accredited program. You will need to take transition courses to prepare for MS level courses in MatE or ChE. These courses do not count towards your graduate degree. What research opportunities are there?As part of the degree, you will complete a thesis or project. Both the thesis and the project involve an individual research or design project, final written document, and final oral defense. Many students working in local industry do their project as part of their current work experience. All students in our program are involved in a research project. Assistance is given to new students in finding a research project either in industry or on campus. We have a number of lab facilities operated by our department. Do you have a PhD program?No. The CSU system only awards BS and MS level degrees. What are the admissions requirements?We do not require the GRE. Chemical Engineering applicants must have a 2.9 or higher in their last 60 semester units (90 quarter units). Materials Engineering applicants must have a 2.7 or higher in their last 60 semester units (90 quarter units). The SJSU Graduate Studies office calculates the GPA based on the transcripts you submit as part of the online application process. Students without a U.S. Bachelor's degree must meet the CSU wide TOEFL requirement or exemptions (from this link, scroll down to the "TOEFL" section). How do I apply?The application is online. You need to submit your transcripts. International students also need to submit a declaration of finance and TOEFL results (or exemption). The application deadlines for Fall and Spring are listed on SJSU's graduate studies website. You can check your application status through the online my.sjsu program. Do you require recommendation letters or GRE scores?No. We do not require recommendation letters or GRE scores. What are the fees?Do you offer financial aid, RA, or TA positions?Unfortunately, we do not offer financial aid or fellowships. Applications for Graders, Lab Assistant, or Teaching Associate positions can be found on the department website on the Student Resources page. Many students also find funded research projects.
