CME Graduate Checklist

This is a list of things you must do over the course of your graduate degree.

GPA Requirement

Maintain a GPA of 3.00 or better in all course work, i.e., your overall GPA should always be 3.0 or better. This includes transition courses, open university courses and courses taken in other departments.

Semester Advising

Every semester, before being able to register for classes, you must fill out the Advising Form.  This form is available online at:

http://www.engr.sjsu.edu/cme/Student_Resources/Advising/graduate.html

Please download this form, fill it out in its entirety, sign it, and submit to the Graduate Advisor.  Please allow up to 4 days for the Advising Hold to be removed.

Conditionally Classified Students: Change of Classification

Clear any and all conditional admission requirements and make sure you submit a "Change of Classification" form, to transfer from Conditionally Classified Standing to Classified Standing, to the Graduate Advisor for approval and signature. This form is available online at:

http://www2.sjsu.edu/gradstudies/forms/class.pdf

Please download this form, fill it out, and submit it to the Graduate Coordinator.

Graduate Writing Requirement

The graduate writing requirement is a CSU requirement that must be satisfied and you should do this as soon as possible. You need to get a B or better in Engr 200W (or 100W) in order to meet the requirement.

If you have taken a technical writing course at a US University and are going to petition to use that course to meet the writing requirement, you MUST meet with the Graduate Coordinator in order to fill out a petition that must be approved by both the College of Engineering Committee and by Graduate Studies. You need to supply a description of the course you took (from the web is fine), a copy of your transcript with the grade you obtained in the course highlighted, and a sample of your writing from a recent course you have taken. You MUST have obtained a C or better in a Technical Writing Course in order to petition.

Candidacy Form

File your Candidacy Form. This can be done only when the English proficiency requirement has been met, your status is "Classified", and 9 units of graduate coursework have been completed. This needs to be done at least two semesters before you plan to graduate by the deadline (see deadlines here http://www2.sjsu.edu/gradstudies/Current/Grad_File_Dates.html)

This form is available on-line at the following address:

http://www2.sjsu.edu/gradstudies/forms/candidacy.pdf

Please download this form, fill it out, and submit it to the Graduate Coordinator.

List only those courses which are to be counted towards the 30 units required for the MS degree. This includes courses you haven't yet completed.  The total must add up to 30 units. The Graduate Writing Requirement (Engr 200W or 100W) is NOT part of the 30 units. Neither are any Transition Courses you were required to meet.

All coursework listed in the Candidacy Form must be completed with a grade of C or better and the GPA must be a B or better.

Thesis Research or Project

A project or thesis is required for all CME students.  Detailed information on thesis and project is found at this link.

File for Graduation

This needs to be done at the beginning of the semester in which you plan to graduate by the deadline (see deadlines link above). You can download the form from this address:
