What is Civil Engineering?

What is Civil Engr.? | Labs & Facilities | Class Schedule | Downloads

Looking for a challenging, well-paid technical career? One that allows you to work outdoors or in an office? Do you like working with other people? If you are a young man or woman who is good in math or science and you enjoy solving unique and interesting problems, then think about Civil and Environmental Engineering at San Jose State University.

Civil Engineers plan, design and supervise construction of water supply and distribution systems, communications networks and transportation systems.

They construct buildings and help solve local and regional pollution or planning problems. They design and test structures that probe the limits of knowledge from the frontiers of space to the ocean depths.

Civil Engineering embraces the latest in modern technology to solve many of the most important challenges facing society. Engineering is a rewarding, respected, well-paid profession with almost unlimited opportunities for both men and women to grow and achieve.

Areas of Specialization Include

  • Construction Engineering and Management
  • Transportation Engineering
  • Geotechnical Engineering
  • Environmental Engineering
  • Water Resource Engineering
  • Structural Engineering and Applied Mechanics
Career Planning

Preparation for a career in Civil Engineering should begin in high school by taking as many math and science courses as possible. Physics, chemistry, algebra, trigonometry, analytic geometry and computer sciences are particularly important. Since engineers must communicate their technical ideas to those they work with, English skills are also very important. Taking courses in English, literature, foreign languages, and speech will help prepare you for studying in our department.
