The graduate program consists of 30 units of approved
course work which may include individual study or a thesis.
The program is built around a core of required
transportation engineering courses offered in the Department
of Civil Engineering. Students with a transportation
emphasis are expected to enroll in all the core courses.
Students are further expected to enroll in a minimum of six
units of courses in an approved minor field. Should a
student for some reason (discussed with the Transportation
Engineering Advisor) not take all the required courses, then
the remaining units are made up through approved electives.

Elective Courses
Electives should be selected in consultation with the
Transportation Engineering Advisor. All civil
engineering graduate and undergraduate elective courses as
well as some interdepartmental courses may be eligible for
selection as an elective course, depending on the student's
specific program. Suitable interdepartmental courses
are described in the "Description of Courses" section.
Advising Procedure
Upon admission to the graduate program, students should make
an appointment with the Transportation Advisor to discuss a
study program (before the first day of classes).
Deviation from this program is possible, but must be
discussed with the advisor prior to enrolling in the
courses.
Degree Requirements:
- A minimum of 30
units of approved coursework, 15 units of which must
be in 200-level courses. Each program must be
approved by the student’s major advisor. The
coursework must be distributed as follows:
- 24 units of
Transportation Engineering coursework,
- 6 units of
coursework in a minor.
|
|
- Fulfillment of the
University English writing requirement (see below).
|
- A culminating
experience (a University requirement) consisting of
(1) a comprehensive examination or (2) an independent
study project or thesis (minimum of 3 units of CE 298
or CE 299 with an oral presentation).
|
Selecting a Minor:
The minor must be selected in consultation with the student’s
major advisor. Acceptable minor areas are: geotechnical
engineering, construction engineering, water resources
engineering, industrial and systems engineering (167, 170,
240), and urban planning (204A, 204B, 220, 225, 226, 240,
256). Other minors can be selected in consultation with
the advisor.
Fulfilling the English
Writing Requirement:
- Competency in written
English may be demonstrated by:
|
- Completing the Writing
Workshop Waiver Examination,
|
- Completing a 3-unit
Engr100W writing course (this is not included as part of
the 30-unit minimum program for the degree),
|
- Completing a Civil
Engineering Department graduate course approved as
satisfying the writing requirement (see advisor), or
|
- Obtaining approval by
the Graduate Studies Office of a professional paper for
which the candidate was the principal author.
|
Students without a B.S. in
Civil Engineering:
Students not having a Baccalaureate Degree in Civil
Engineering must satisfy the undergraduate equivalents of Chem
1A, Math 30, 31, 32 and 133A, Physics 70 and 71,
CE 008, CE 99,
ME 111, CE 112, CE 120, CE 121, CE 130, CE 140, and CE 150;
and any additional courses deemed necessary by the student’s
major advisor.
