BIOMETRIC NEWS

The term "biometric identification", as used here, refers to the utilization of physiological characteristics and behavioral traits for the automatic identification, or identity verification, of persons. In general, biometric identification requires sensors to convert a physical characteristic or behavior of a person into a signal that can be stored, or compared to previously stored signals, using a computer. Consequently, the detailed study of such devices requires the disciplines of human factors, biology, psychology, mathematics, statistics, and electrical and computer engineering. When used after the commission of a crime, biometric identification becomes an area of forensic science. The potential personal intrusiveness of these devices, and the possibility of misuse of the personal data acquired, raises legal, ethical, social and political issues, as well. The goal of our research initiative is to facilitate the cooperation of researchers from many disciplines in the study of biometric identification devices, their uses and their impact on society.
