1. April BACHFES Meeting Announcement

Wednesday, April 14, 2004
7:00 to 9:00 pm
7:00 to 7:30: Socializing, Joining BACHFES

Location:
Office Master
21730 Stevens Creek Blvd. #101
Cupertino, CA 95014
Tel: 408-253-0985

Speaker: Stephanie Rosenbaum, Tec-Ed, Inc.

Topic: Stalking the User: How Anthropology Helps Design Successful Products

Abstract:
In-depth research into users' behavior shortens development time, increases sales, reduces support costs, and dramatically improves customer satisfaction. Most commercial user research today consists of usability laboratory testing; but many organizations are joining Intel, Yahoo!, and HP in applying anthropology field research techniques (also called ethnographic methods) to study product and website users in their homes and offices, learning how they behave in their own natural situations. Such research gives us data and insights that are impossible to glean any other way. Stephanie's talk will describe, and illustrate with case histories, how you can apply ethnographic field methods to achieve more successful products and websites.

About the Speaker:
Stephanie Rosenbaum is founder and president of Tec-Ed, Inc., a 15-person firm specializing in user research and information design (see www.teced.com). Tec-Ed maintains offices in Palo Alto, California; Ann Arbor, Michigan; and Rochester, New York. Clients include Sun Microsystems, the IEEE, Yahoo!, Microsoft, NIH, Cisco Systems, and many smaller firms. Stephanie is active in ACM SIGCHI and the Usability Professionals' Association, as well as HFES. Her many publications include a chapter on "Making Usability Research Usable" in Klaus Kaasgaard's book, Software Design and Usability, published by the Copenhagen Business School Press. Her research background includes anthropology studies at Columbia University and experimental psychology research for the University of California at Berkeley.
