Notes from the December
BACHFES meeting and presentation
Time: 7pm
Location: Adobe Systems, San Jose, California.
Attendees: 9
Guest speaker Del Coates from
San Jose State University gave a presentation titled "Reconciling
ergonomic and aesthetic objectives in product design." Professor
Coates discussed his ideas on design, aesthetics, and ergonomics as a
whole, and presented a framework that captures the relationship between
various factors that influence how a person responds to a design. His
compelling ideas are presented in great detail in his latest book, "Watches
Tell More than Time", published by McGraw-Hill.
Speaker bio:
Del Coates has had
a long and distinguished career as a practitioner and professor of industrial
design. As a consultant, he has advised an international list of clients.
He was a designer with Ford Motor Company's Advanced Vehicle Concepts
Department. He was a member of the team that designed Herman Miller's
Action Office, the furniture system that revolutionized office landscapes.
As director of design research at GVO, a pioneer product design and
development firm in Silicon Valley, he contributed to the design of
only the second computer to be featured in the design collection of
New York's Museum of Modern Art. As design strategist for Nissan Motor
Company, he coined the name and concept that became the Maxima.
Del Coates is one
of the world's most influential industrial design teachers. Alumni of
San Jose State University, where he is a professor of industrial design
and ergonomics, have taken leading roles in shaping the products of
Silicon Valley-arguably the crucible of modern industrial design-for
nearly two decades. Applying principles described in this book, former
and current students routinely win top design honors, including those
awarded annually by BusinessWeek and the Industrial Designers Society
of America (IDSA).
He also teaches
his principles and methods each summer to business, engineering, and
design professionals at the University of Michigan's Human Factors Engineering
Short Courses.
