BACHFES meeting and presentation
Time: 7pm
Location: Office Master
on 21730 Stevens Creek Boulevard, #101, Cupertino, California (map).
Attendees: 14
The meeting started with Abbas

it has faced over the past few years. Local chapter membership was once
high (upwards of 120 members), but the chapter has been inactive for the
past 2 years. The chapter revitalization effort was discussed, volunteer
Board members were introduced, and a plea was made for interested members
to consider serving as chapter officers.
Guest speaker Becky Hooey from
Monterey Technologies
made a presentation about the Taxiway Navigation and Situation Awareness
System (T-NASA) that has been developed at the NASA
Ames Human-Centered Systems Lab. The emphasis of the presentation
was on the human-centered design process that the team followed to research,
develop, and test the T-NASA system.

Meeting overview
The purpose of the meeting
was to discuss the current state of the revitalization effort for the
Bay Area Chapter of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society. The following
issues were discussed at the meeting:
- Final updates to the chapter
bylaws
- BACHFES financial and tax
status
- Increasing membership
- University relations and
academic liaisons
- Formal duties and responsibilities
of Board members
- Future meetings and potential
speakers
Summary of decisions
The following decisions were
made at the meeting:
- Updates to the chapter bylaws
were provided to Abbas Moallem. Final edits will be consolidated and
the updated bylaws will be submitted to HFES for approval.
- BACHFES currently has an
account with Washington Mutual, and is using the nonprofit tax status
of national HFES. As BACHFES grows, the chapter will need to consider
adopting its own Tax ID.
- The Board will wait for
feedback from the early October mailing campaign to determine additional
ways to increase membership. Pat Tittiranonda will investigate making
an announcement and distributing chapter information at a local Ergonomics
conference.
- BACHFES will work to strengthen
relationships with existing and potential colleges and universities
through academic liaisons.
- Board members agreed to
maintain their current responsibilities and formalize their positions
as acting officers until replaced by interested chapter members. Ann
Lasko-Harvill will take responsibility for the chapter newsletter, Thomas
Ayres will assume meeting planning responsibilities, Pat Tittiranonda
will assume the role of acting Treasurer, Steve Fadden will serve as
acting Secretary, and Abbas Moallem will serve as acting President.
