About The Speaker:
Al Williams has ten years experience as expert witness in bicycle human factors, and thirty-two years in defense industry human factors engineering.

As Principal at Bicycle Human Factors, San Jose Ca., Mr. Williams analyzes and reconstructs accidents, preceding events, visual situations, bicycling equipment, etc., demonstrates maneuvers, and provides insight into and demonstration of cyclist performance capabilities, behavior, decisions, attitudes, beliefs, and practices, as well as the characteristics of bicycle equipment.

Mr. Williams has bicycled over 270,000 miles. This mileage has included recreational riding, utility riding, organized tours, commuting, and racing in all types of terrain and weather, high and low traffic conditions, day and night, on-road and off-road, alone, in small groups, and in large groups; in California, the Midwest, and the East. He participated in bicycle road racing for 33 years, and in off-road bicycle racing for four years. Mr. Williams earned nine state and regional medals in U.S. Cycling Federation competition, and was a Category II competitor. He was Pennsylvania State Road Racing Champion in 1970 and in 1971.

As a Systems Safety Engineer for classified and commercial satellite development and launch programs Lockheed Martin Missiles and Space, Sunnyvale Ca., Mr. Williams was responsible for equipment and personnel safety on the satellite production factory floor and for documentation of safety of launch equipment for certification to rocket launch facility management. He also supported computer-human interface (CHI) development within a classified program, and was Responsible Human Factors Engineer for the THAAD (Theater High Altitude Area Defense) program.

Publications: Mr. Williams has authored or co-authored over 20 publications in the open
professional literature, including "Overheating Brakes," (Bike Tech, 1986, Vol. 5, No. 1, pp. 11-12), that addresses the quantities of heat produced when bicycle brakes are "dragged" down long grades at various road speeds. His human engineering work ! has been cited in several texts, including C. D. Wickens, Engineering Psychology and Human Performance.

BACHFES meeting attendance is free and open to the public.
BACHFES programs are not audio- or videotaped, and taping by attendees is

3 - National Ergonomics Month

As you may have heard, October is National Ergonomics Month: A Time For Teaching, Learning, Service, and Fun! The goal is to develop enthusiastic supporters of good ergonomics in design and the human factors/ergonomics profession as a whole amongst corporate executives, technical professionals, consumers, and students. The 2003 effort is concentrated upon reaching the community as a whole with a special emphasis on students, families, and community service.

We will discuss how our chapter can participate during the September meeting.
