About the American Society of Mechanical Engineers at San Jose State University
ASME, International (formerly known as the American Society of Mechanical Engineers) is a professional, not-for-profit organization dedicated to collaboration, knowledge sharing and skill development across all engineering disciplines. To learn more about ASME, International, visit: ASME.org

Our student section has been working diligently in preparation for the Fall 2009 semester. This year we are focusing on creating participation opportunities and expanding industry exposure for students.

Opportunities

Currently, our most popular project is the Human Powered Vehicle Competition (HPVC). This year's design consisted of a tandem bicycle ridden by two people, one in front and one in back. Our team was the only school to enter a tandem bicycle in the competition. The design for the HPVC 2010 competition is currently in progress.

Every year, students have the opportunity to participate in a Student Design Competition (SDC) at ASME's annual Student Professional Development Conference (SPDC). This year's project is "EARTH SAVER: Autonomous Material Sorter". Project details are available here.

One of the benefits of being a registered ASME Student Member is the opportunity to attend and compete in the projects mentioned and travel to ASME conferences.

For more information on formal registration with ASME, click on the 'Get Involved' tab or follow this link.

The latest addition to club opportunities are volunteer projects in the community and elsewhere. We are currently working on collaborating with Engineers Without Borders (EWB) to provide the opportunity for a engineering-based volunteer project abroad.

Information on local volunteer opportunities will be posted soon. Please check back with us regularly.

Industry Exposure

It is very important that students have as much industry exposure as possible. This provides students with crucial connections for internships and job opportunities after graduation. It also helps to broaden the knowledge of career opportunities for mechanical engineers for students who are still deciding what their career goals are.

Industry Shadow Days and Tours are vital to this mission. They help to create an environment where engineering students can meet and interact with industry representatives outside of the classroom. There is much to learn from experienced engineers who share their history and provide important advice and mentorship for students.

Information on Industry Shadow Days and Tours will be posted soon. Please check back with us regularly.
