Updates, News and Coming Events!
Tuesday, October 6, 2009 by Andrea Rios, Section Chair
Hello Everybody,
On September 9, 2009, ASME had its Kickoff Meeting of the year! We had a very successful meeting! Approximately 60 people, including officers, attended the meeting! We are so proud! Special thanks go out to Dr. Amip Shah from HP Labs who came and spoke to our students. Thank you all for coming out to learn more about ASME and supporting us!
See pictures from the Kickoff and All Club Bowling Social, here.
Four ASME officers attended the ASME Student Leadership Seminar at Santa Clara University (SCU) on October 3, 2009. The event was very informative and a great success!! We’d like to thank the ASME student section at SCU and members of the Professional Santa Clara Valley Section for hosting and helping make it a wonderful event. There were other colleges there as well: University of San Diego, CSU San Diego, CSU Fresno, CSU Northridge, University of Nevada Las Vegas, CalPoly SLO and California Maritime Academy. All the officers learned quite a bit and we are excited to implement some new things into our section. All student members will be hearing about this soon!
See pictures from the Student Leadership Seminar (SLS), here.
We have a couple of things to cover with all of you!
- Meetings
- Open Positions
- Events: Majors Night, Job Fair and Mechanical/Aerospace Dept. BBQ/Potluck
- Conferences and Competitions: Student Professional Development Conference (SPDC) and Human Powered Vehicle Challenge (HPVC)
Meetings
We will soon be announcing a regular meeting time for the officers. If anyone is interested in becoming an officer, we strongly suggest attending a meeting to get the feel of it. We will send out word to you all on the days, times and locations for those meetings ASAP. Keep checking back with us if you’re interested!
Information on general meetings and ASME events will be posted soon, as well! :-)
Open Officer Positions
The student chapter is looking to expand its Executive Board of officers. Our next officer meeting will consist of listing the committees we want to create and the officer positions available. All enthusiastic, dedicated engineering students are encouraged to apply. A brief training and orientation will be conducted before winter break and once school starts in the spring. We plan to hit the ground running when school starts in January. If you are highly interested in becoming an active officer, send us some quick info by clicking on the link below, so that we can be sure to contact you as soon as possible!

Events
10/8 - Majors Night - 4pm to 6:30p
All of the departments in the College of Engineering will have tables out on the first floor of the building. This event is designed to set up an environment where students interested in a particular major can go and speak to other students and faculty to find out more information on the field. This is particularly useful for students who haven’t quite decided on their majors. Stop by, ask questions and say hello!
10/15 - Job Fair – Student Union Ballroom – 3p to 5p
Freshman are encouraged to attend! It’s never too early to learn the ropes! Students with an early bird pass can get in at 12p! Visit the Career Center Website for more information on how to get one! http://www.careercenter.sjsu.edu/
